A decade of research.
Built for this moment.

Terrace Networks grew out of years of academic research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where the founding team studied how cloud infrastructure could be used to observe and characterize network attacks that legacy systems cannot see. The technology was validated in peer-reviewed literature and tested against real adversary traffic before the company existed. The three founders bring more than sixty years of combined experience in network security research, with prior exits, government partnerships, and publication records that span the field’s top venues.

The exploitation timeline has been tightening for years. AI accelerated it. We had already spent a decade building the infrastructure to measure it.

The security community has been slowly going blind for twenty years. The monitoring infrastructure that the industry relies on was mapped by sophisticated adversaries long ago, and the collection architecture barely changed in response. Meanwhile, the coordinated disclosure process that was supposed to give defenders time to respond has been collapsing under the weight of AI-assisted development, where code ships faster than anyone can evaluate it.

We started this company because the research made the problem undeniable, and because we had spent a decade building the only collection apparatus that could address it at scale. Eric’s dissertation changed how the field thinks about internet measurement and cloud security. Patrick’s work on adversarial machine learning informs how we validate every rule our AI generates. Paul has founded and exited three enterprise security companies and knows what it takes to build products that security teams will actually deploy. Between us, we have published more than 400 papers and spent over sixty years working on the problems Terrace was built to solve.

The company is named after the Memorial Union Terrace at the University of Wisconsin, where this work began. We thought that was worth remembering.
Eric Pauley
Co-Founder and CEO

The people behind the research.

Three founders with more than 60 years in network security research, spanning academic publication and deployed enterprise products.

Eric Pauley

Co-Founder and CEO
PhD from UW-Madison, where his dissertation produced the measurement technology at the core of Terrace. Faculty at Virginia Tech before founding the company.
Prior exit: Sendtric

Patrick McDaniel

Co-Founder and Chief Scientist
Tsun-Ming Shih Professor at UW-Madison. IEEE Fellow, ACM Fellow, AAAS Fellow. 300+ papers, 62,000+ citations. His work on adversarial machine learning informs how Terrace validates every rule its AI generates.
Prior exit: Primary Access

Paul Barford

Co-Founder
Professor of Computer Science at UW-Madison. Founded the Wisconsin Advanced Internet Laboratory. Three prior enterprise security exits, including Nemean Networks (acquired by Qualys).

UW-Madison

Five years of peer-reviewed research before the company existed. Published at USENIX Security, IEEE S&P, ACM IMC, and NDSS.

Proven across industries

Validated deployments across industry, academic, and government networks. Terrace is proven in live deployments with security teams across government defense, academic, and industry networks.

400+ Publications

The founding team’s combined research record spans the field’s top venues across three decades of network security work.
